“All that is gold does not glitter,
not all those who wander are lost;
the old that is strong does not wither,
deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
a light from the shadows shall spring;
renewed shall be blade that was broken,
the crownless again shall be king.” J.R.R. Tolkein
In this well known prophesy from Lord of the Rings, Tolkien alludes to common perceptions and how they can be misleading. This is of course, the province of photographers who deal with perceptions and the lies they tell all the time. Modern digital imagery allows gifted professionals and novices as well opportunities to make profound changes to images to the point where the perception often bears little resemblance to the reality. This, of course, is not limited to the arts; many popular notions and assumptions have been hijacked by groups seeking either political or financial advantage for themselves. Yet there are some who are still seeking the reality. They are not lost, as the poem above suggests, they are simply following a different path, looking for the "light from the shadows" both real and metaphorical.
